Downton & Illness
The former was good and the latter not so good. Feeling a little icky on account of too much vodka (I'm assuming). That'll learn me. Anyway, fab day, great to spend time with the older ones, and I heart Xmas. Hope you do too. Merry stuff to you all. Roll on next year. Good night and God bless. That's all. J x
Festive Felicitations
to you all. Hope you're having a lovely day. We are in grey-skied, slightly-damp, but-no-snow-yet, Swansea. Dinner is about to be served (we managed to get past the bacon emergency - don't ask). Two glasses of wine. Each. Have been consumed by the Aged Ps so there has been some snoozing on the sofa already - normally this doesn't happen until after the dinner. However, I think the bacon incident took it out of us all.
Lots of lovely presents all round including - for me - money towards an iPad2. You can only imagine my excitement! Anyway, I need to go and do some festive chores now to keep the peace so will try and update you later... Ho Ho Ho. That's all. J x

And So You're Back...
... why yes I am. Apologies dear followers (should any of you still be left checking out this blog) but I've been going through a phase. A not-blogging phase. No idea why. There it is.
So where are we? Well, personally, I'm in Swansea. Made the trek home today. And very glad I am to be home. The Aged Ps are still lovely its just a shame they live in Swansea. The journey was a bit of a nightmare what with the rain and all but at least we didn't have the snow - or the illness - of previous years. Early days obviously but fingers crossed.
On the subject of illness, Mum goes in for her operation on 09/01/12. It won't be an easy op as they need to remove both the lump (which the latest MRI shows is still growing) and one of her adrenal glands. This latter part of the op can be a bit difficult since your adrenal glands heavily influence your blood pressure. Mum, however, is more worried about hospital acquired infections so I'll be coming home for the duration and visiting daily with my wet wipes to wipe all around her bed and stuff.
Looking forward to Xmas as there are loads of presents under the tree. I'll let you know what I get (it'll take some doing to beat the bowler hat) in due course. Wider-family duties tomorrow and then again on the 28th but 2 days to ourselves on 25th and 26th. Bound to be rows!
Elsewhere Fig is still trying to buy a house (its a complicated business), Lesley's op went OK and DD is still as fabulous as ever. Back up to Manc on the 29th when I will be attending the lovely Ev's Xmas Party. Just need to find me some Xmas socks before then...
Anyway, glad to be back. Thanks for sticking with me. And I'll blog again soon. That's all. J x

News
First the sad news. My cousin Mike died on Tuesday. He had cancer (doesn't all my family) but it was pretty swift all the same. I was never close to Mike although I am closer to his daughter, Kathryn, who posts on this blog from time to time. I'm sure you'll all join me in sending Kathryn our condolences and our best wishes and to the rest of Mike's family too. He was 67 which is no age at all.
On a happier front DD is off spending the weekend in Glasgow (happy for her I mean - I, of course, am missing her dreadfully...). She gets back Tuesday evening I believe.
Also on the happy front Swansea won their first Premiership match on Saturday and my father was actually there to witness it which I'm sure has cheered him up no end. I shall speak to him later and listen to him crow.
I have done little this weekend apart from clean my shoes and clean (some of) the flat. Which is quite enough in my books.
I did see Mrs T in the week - a far too brief coffee in Waterstones - which is always a pleasure. Particularly of course when she is accompanied by the very youthful Penny.
The week ahead is busy - something on every evening so I'll update you all when I've done all that. That's all. J x

Sorry for delay...
... it must be my age.
So the birthday weekend was a huge success with much fun had by all. Lovely to see the Figster again and to spend some time doing what we do best: drinking, shopping, Playstation, bitching. Not necessarily in that order.
The birthday meal was lovely with Fig, Gill, Lesley, Bryn & Michelle, Ev and, of course, DD attending. Restaurant Bar & Grill is one of my favourite restaurants but I have to say that the food wasn't the best I've ever had there. Apart from the chocolate birthday torte (with candles and accompanying singing) but that was home-made by Ev and as delicious as ever.
In other news, work is much the same (too busy), City won but still aren't top and Swans lost. Again. Hamilton was beaten to third by bloody Alonso but it was an exciting race. Oh and Planet of the Apes is better than you might expect.
Busy week ahead again including more living together with DD which is, of course, fantastic. That's all for now. J x.

Completely Gratuitous Long Hair and Rock Music - just because I can...
.... for all those feeling too far from home tonight. J x
Thank Fuck
So talked to my old Ma this afternoon and the news is all good. Looks like the "5cm abnormality" is not in the lymph gland but is in fact a "quite common" cyst/growth/thingy next to the adrenal gland. And its benign. There may need to be a biopsy to make sure and there will undoubtedly be further scans in the future to check everything is still OK but bloody hell. How good is all that? I can't tell you how relieved I am (and that can only be a tenth of what my old Ma (God bless 'er) is feeling). Phew. Should be able to sleep tonight at least... Peace to all and thank you for your prayers (if you prayed). That's all for now.
And Happy Pride everyone. J x

Back In Manc
Took mother for CT scan this morning. All went well. She gets results on 26/08. I then drove back to Manchester (ready for work tomorrow). Roads were freakily clear especially since I drove through rush hour. Father went back to the eye clinic this afternoon and its all looking good. He doesn't need to see the doctor for another month now. Which means we can concentrate on my Mum. We'll know - hopefully - the full extent of everything, what the recommended treatment is, the prognosis etc a week on Friday. Fingers crossed everyone. You pulled me through the Big C now I'm asking you to do it for my Mum too. Thanks. J x

Hurrah
Operation was a success. Waited for ages (with nurses running up every two minutes to put drops in his eyes) and then it was all over in 20 minutes. He's got some dos and don'ts to observe over the next 4 weeks (and loads more eye drops to administer) but, fingers crossed, its all looking good at the moment.
Tomorrow is Mum's CT Scan which, I imagine, doesn't appear quite so intimidating now as we already pretty much know the bad news. I suspect that Mum is harbouring a secret hope that the scan shows up something benign but the oncologist seemed quite certain of his diagnosis. Anyway, the appointment is for 1120 and once that is over I'l be heading back to Manchester and then back to work on Thursday where I'm sure there'll be all manner of stuff waiting for me. But its been a pretty gruelling few days here in Swansea for all of us. Highs and lows all round. That's life though. I'l update everyone when I have more news. J x

Another Day, Another Waiting Room
So this time it's the Day Surgery Unit and we're waiting for Dad to go in for his cataract operation. He's feeling a little nervous (as are we all) so I'll try and distract him by talking about the Swans performance last night... J x

Not Good News
So attended the consultation with the oncologist with my mother this afternoon. It sounds as though her cancer is back. They don't know too much without a CT scan and a biopsy (CT scan will happen on Wednesday with the results of that known on 26/08). But the oncologist is talking about a 5cm "abnormality" in my Mum's lymph nodes. This is in the same general area as the first two instances of cancer she had so, fingers crossed, if it is cancer, its the same type and can be cured simply by chemotherapy without the need for surgery. Of course, as anyone who has been through it knows, "simply" by chemotherapy doesn't begin to explain what its like to go through. All we can say really is that it is better than having surgery and the chemotherapy.
The last time she had chemotherapy she lost all her hair and it was at the same tine as my sister died (and it will be the 10th anniversary of Sally's death on 23/08 this year) so it is difficult to know what it will be like for her this time. Hopefully she is strong enough to come through it again like last time. Rest assured me and my Dad and anyone who knows her will be doing their level best to ensure that this is what happens. I know my Mum is scared - who wouldn't be - and putting a brave face on this which makes it difficult to offer help. But she knows I'll be there to do whatever I can.
Don't know what else to say really. We can't make any decisions or plans until we know what to expect from her treatment and we can't know this with any certainty until 26/08. Fingers crossed until then. If you do pray, please remember us in your prayers. Thanks. J x

Kate Adie Central
I'm determined to get through this blog posting without using the phrase "kicking off"
Well its all kicking off (damn) in central Manchester tonight dear readers. Me and DD even had to alter our cocktailing plans to avoid all the stuff kicking off (bugger) in Piccadilly Gardens. We'd originally been planning to go to The Grill On New York Street only according to the police it was more like Grill in the Bronx tonight on account of stuff all kicking off (bloody hell) on Portland Street. The policewoman on Piccadilly Station actually said to me "well you might be safe if you walk down Portland Street. But frankly honey is a Chase Vodka martini worth it?" (I might have made the second sentence up).
So we went to Felicinis instead but even they locked and barred the front doors and made us leave by the fire exit on account of stuff all kicking off (aaaaaargh) on Oxford Street. And that bloody police helicopter won't shut the f%^$ up so there"ll be no sleep for me tonight.
Anyway, I'm too giddy with the excitement of everything kicking off (what the hell) tonight to sleep anyway. Rest assured though dear readers that I'm home safe and sound in my pyjamas and very nearly tucked up in bed with a good George R R Martin. That's all. J x

Starting to Rain Now
But it held off last night for the Halle open air concert at Tatton Park. For once. It was glorious, marred only by the usual chavs in the audience talking through the music and the chav on stage (Lesley Garrett) warbling like some demented pub singer. She has a voice that hovers between being perfect for opera and great for musicals but doesn't quite hit the note for either. I'm not a fan.
But the food was good, the drink was good and the company was, as ever, superb. I really should go out with Jane & Bill more because they're really nice people (even if Jane and I will never agree on anything work related). Maybe I should take their advice and sign up for the Royal Exchange season ticket each year. One to think about...
Work... I can't even begin to tell you. No really, I can't. Karen will shout at me.
Last week at Paul & Maggie's was great. The food was divine (thank you Paul) and I met a whole load of new people and had a fun night. Paul & Maggie are lovely people too. In fact my life is full of lovely people for which I am eternally grateful.
Ma & Pa (also lovely people) are OK. Father goes into hospital on 16/08 for a cataract operation so I'll go home for a few days to help out. Mother sees her specialist on 17/08 so I'll wait around for that too. That's all. Oh apart from I have some am dram to go to tonight (yes, its Jim) which could be good.... That really is all. J x

A Week On
Time to reflect therefore on MIF 2011. I had a fantastic time. I love culture and stuff like that. The only real disappointment was Johnny Vegas. Nice idea but really badly written and poor execution. The highlights were Maria Abramovich - just incredible and indescribable and Damon Albarn - beautiful to look at and to listen to. Surprise hit was Macbeth. In a cave. With an Irish accent.
The week back in work has been the usual bollocks from the usual suspects. I started the week with 135 unread e-mails and ended the week with 97 unread e-mails. And I read about a thousand during the week (maybe a little exaggeration there but not much!). Did 2 helpline shifts making some new friends along the way, had dinner with the lovely Sarah from Leeds at Felicinis - its been so long! - and did a course on public speaking in Leeds. Which was fun.
Off to the lovely Paul & Maggie's tonight for a meal. They're always good fun (albeit that they live in Flixton - sorry Maggie). I have to take my own martini although they do supply vodka...
DD was round in the week to watch The Apprentice final which was fun. Poor Helen although she only had herself to blame. Was reviewing twitter whilst it was on and when it came to the boardroom and she changed her business plan before our very eyes, someone tweeted "Bollocks. I'll make biscuits then. Whatever" which really made me laugh. Perhaps it only works if you read it at the time though. Didn't think Torchwood lived up to the standard of the opening episode this week. Although the gay steward joke was quite good. That's all. J x

MIF 7 (ish)
Not really part of MIF but went to see Tree of Life by Terrence Malick with DD at The Cornerhouse yesterday evening. After a bit of a mix up over times and dates we picked up our tickets and took our seats for 2 and a half hours of utter nonsense. Brad Pitt looked dead cute though and the child actors were excellent. But the dinosaurs? And as we remarked afterwards you can't beat some good shots of molten lava in a film about family life...
*Apprentice Spoiler Alert* Then back to my place to watch the final of The Apprentice. I only mention this because it allows me to share a tweet from someone during Helen's volte face on Business Plans. They suggested she was saying "Bollocks. I'll make biscuits then. Whatever". It made us laugh. Back to work today (sort of) with a training course in Leeds. That's all. J x

MIF 6
2 days and what a Wagner-fest it turned out to be. Friday kick-off at 1930 (after a meal at new restaurant Grill on New York Street - we'll definitely be going back there) started with a "play" explaining the background to Die Walkure. At least that was what we thought it would be and as the director was Neil Bartlett, expectations were high. However, it was really disappointing. Essentially it was 3 actors reading extracts from Wagner's diaries and contemporary accounts of his work. Interesting as an academic exercise (no doubt) but not what we were hoping for. Luckily the synopses in the programme told us all we needed to know. Act 1 followed the interval and gosh, what a twisted, mixed-up world old Norse mythology was. Turns out the "hero" in this part falls in love with and marries his twin sister. Turns out later that their father was actually King of the Gods (Wotan) and so it was therefore probably OK.
Day 2 was more of a challenge. Kick-off happened at 1530 with an announcement by Sir Mark Elder (our conductor) that Wotan's voice wasn't performing too well. Luckily, he told us, "we have a Wotan in a car heading up the M6 so if it gives out the performance can still go on"! As it turned out, Wotan managed to make it through. Act 2 is really complicated stuff (our hero ends up dead, betrayed by his father whose wife insists that he betray him - not because the brother and sister have married and conceived a child but because the sister left her husband to do this - apparently the more heinous sin). Anyway, Act 2 is about 2 hours long and much the best of the three I felt.
Then it was a 75 minute interval so back to DD's for cocktails and canapes - this worked really well I thought. Act 3 includes that very famous (and stirring) Ride of the Valkyries music. However, looking at the surtitles for this bit, they're not actually riding off to war as the stirring music might suggest but rather just chatting about their horses - a sort of Norse Pony Club gathering. Quite incongruous. However, during this bit Wotan disowns his daughter (Brunhilde - who in this production was magnificent) and condemns her to sleep on a rock until she gets married. Bizarre stuff. This Act goes on a bit as it takes ages for Wotan to put her to sleep so there's not much story happening. Then off to Rain Bar for drinks. Great fun.
I thought the Wagner was enjoyable and interesting and I'd really like to see it "staged" properly by a good opera company - maybe the Royal Opera.
That's all. J x Apart from to say thank you to Andrea for the lovely card.

MIF 5
Well, Victoria Wood was Victoria Wood. All the classic signs and trademarks were there although if I'm honest, it felt a little like unfinished business. Great idea - drawing parallels between kids expressing themselves through music and them doing the same when they were middle-aged because they couldn't say what they wanted to in 60s Britain. Highlights included a song about dining out at a Berni Inn (we journey into / our Berni Inn to / have a lovely meal...) and one about sexual frustration (I have a box of sex tricks / that make me hum like a Scalextrix ...) but not a lot else. The fat girl was good though. And Ms Wood was 4 rows in front of us in the audience so it would have been rude to boo.
It was very much a local crowd unlike a lot of the other stuff in the Festival and I think that was pretty much the point of it. I expect to see it developed further and then re-done as TV show and it will be all the better for the extra time spent on it. Out to Alchemist afterwards for drinks which is always good fun. Wagner tonight (plays Darth Vader music in head as can't hum any Wagner. Yet). That's all. J x

OMG. What an utterly utterly fabulous experience. The Life and Death of Marina Abramovich will be one of my most memorable theatre experiences. Ever. Its like nothing I have ever seen before. Part theatre, part musical, part performance art. It just defies description. At one point I almost cried and it takes a lot to get me to that stage in a theatre (it tends to happen more often at films). It was breathtaking, heart-breaking, stimulating, thought-provoking, mesmerising theatre. As I said I've seen nothing like it before. Loved it.
Lesley was less sure...

MIF 3
Well, Macbeth was fantastic. As I said, it was performed in a cave and "in promenade". The cave was bloody freezing (but we had been warned about this and therefore taken along warm clothes). But the play was spectacular. Witches work particularly well in a cave! They had cut the play down so that it only lasted an hour but all the essential bits were there. The cast were unknown but very good once you got used to a Macbeth with an Irish accent.
But they all appeared all over the cave and also in and amongst the audience (about 25 of us). Macbeth was stood right in front of me looking into my eyes whilst he was saying that he was about to slaughter the wife and kids of Macduff. Honestly, a chill ran down my spine. It just made it all seem more real then when it happens at a distance on the stage. Really good. And the acoustics were excellent.
And what a revelation Buxton is. Really pretty little town an hour's train journey away. It has an Opera House that puts on real opera (as well as loads of Gilbert & Sullivan) and a brilliant little cocktail bar called Monk which makes a mean vodka martini and has a cute manager called Mike. I suspect we'll be back.
Marina Abramovich tonight at The Lowry which will, I expect, be a whole other kettle of fish. The Times loved it though. Incidentally am thinking of stopping reading The Times and switching to the Independent stable of papers. Surely they can't all be corrupt? Anyway, that's all. J x

Marina Abramovich tonight at The Lowry which will, I expect, be a whole other kettle of fish. The Times loved it though. Incidentally am thinking of stopping reading The Times and switching to the Independent stable of papers. Surely they can't all be corrupt? Anyway, that's all. J x

MIF 2
So last night was Johnny Vegas in a "home shopping" play type thing which, at one stage, was actually broadcast live over a home shopping network. Great idea which lacked a little in the execution I felt. The 2 supporting actors were very good but Vegas himself was disappointing and the writing could have been better - although there were some laugh out loud one-liners. And never has the word "Leeds" raised such a laugh before.
The audience was interesting - Victoria Wood and 2 of the dragons from Dragons Den and any number of pretentious media types. Overheard leaving the venue: "Oh I didn't go to the play, but I did go to the after-show party. That was good". Don't you just love them? Oh, Paul Morley was there too as he had been doing something earlier. Not sure what it is he does actually.
Tonight is Macbeth in a cave in Buxton. Not strictly part of MIF but will hopefully be fun. That's all. J x

Tonight, Neptune will have travelled around the sun once since it was discovered by us 165 years ago. How fascinating is that? That's all. J x
MIF 1
So, it was Dr Dee on Saturday. The new Damon Albarn opera. Got dressed up in all my best togs - yes, including the Comme des Garcons white shirt with the random bits of tartan stitched to it. I adore that shirt but limit myself to wearing it just a few times a year so it always feels fresh. Also my new(ish) Gievenchy tux jacket. We had seats in the circle which, in retrospect, probably wasn't the best idea since the legroom is quite restricted. But thinking back, when I booked there may not have been any good seats left in the stalls. Anyway, the opera is a triumph. The music is fantastic, the subject matter very interesting and the staging out of this world. We all really really enjoyed it as did the crowd on the night - a rapturous standing ovation. Damon seemed quite chuffed.
To The Palace hotel bar for a drink afterwards (and to see if DD could stalk Damon again like 4 years ago). However, it seems like Damon had learned his lesson and steered well clear! Many VMs were drunk though and then it was off to the Molly House off Canal Street for some more. There we met up with David and Nick and then back to theirs for more vodka! Honestly, my poor liver. Have vowed to stick to beer for the rest of the week. No idea how or when I got home.
Yesterday was recovery and tonight its off to Johnny Vegas and his home shopping thing. No idea what that will be like but I'll be dressing down...! That's all. J x

Good News
So thank you one and all for your good wishes and sorry if I haven't got back to you yet. I will do.
The God that is Sean has pronounced me to be "signed off" at the 5 year point. I am immensely grateful to him, to the NHS (well, some of them), my friends, HMRC and especially my family and special friends for all that has been done for me over the last 5 years. You have all been fucking brilliant. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
However, it seems I shall be attending the Christie now on an annual basis. For this I have my father to thank. He refuses to believe that it won't come back. Thanks Dad! To be fair I do draw some comfort from the fact that will be going back once a year. And hello, by the way, to the lovely Debbie who, despite not being able to get up in time to see me in the hospital, did give me a ring when she had crawled out of bed at about midday...!
Was treated to a lovely meal at The Alchemist tonight by my chums DD, Lesley and Gill (thank you guys, I had a lovely time). Did get a discount but not on drinks. And frankly, 20% on our food bill is almost not worth having whereas 20% on the drinks bill would be a substantial amount of money. My thanks go to Steph for sorting this out though.
And that's all for now. I'm happy. Bloody hell for the NOTW stuff. Goodnight. J x

Who Knew?
That Kent could be such fun? Just got back from a long weekend in Ramsgate. Me, DD, Bryn & Michelle got a great deal on a house on the seafront in Ramsgate so off we went. Whilst there we went to Margate - the new Turner Contemporary gallery, absolutely fantastic as was the new artist's quarter with its little studios and bars and cafes. I bought some original art and DD managed to blag two rather fancy champagne glasses out of one of the barmen. We also went to Sandwich (very pretty) and Deal (impossible to park and really only saw the inside of a pub - the pier is shite too). On the way down we'd called into Leeds Castle - really nice, the maze is fantastic as are the grounds and the peacocks (no lie). The weather was absolutely gorgeous the whole time and we had some great (and one not so great) meals. The house was 5 storeys (you should see my thighs) and we all had separate bedrooms. The living room had a nice terrace that looked out over the sea and the Royal Harbour. And then it was back to work which is rubbish at the moment. But I'm off all next week sampling the delights of the Manchester International Festival. Really looking forward to it as there's some great stuff on. Expect regular reports as I'll be of work - but may be hungover!
Today is my last ever (touches wood) appointment at Christies. Yes folks, its been 5 years since the end of my cancer treatment and hopefully I'll get sign off as fully cured this morning. I'll obviously blog later and let you know. Who knew that from that first blog entry from my hospital bed this whole blog thing would grow? Might be time for a reevaluation of the purpose/worth of this blog now. Rest assured I'l let you know what's happening as soon as I do. That's all. J x

Morning All
A lovely sunny day in Manchester and a good forecast for DD's barbecue this afternoon. Loads going on as ever and not quite sure where to start. Perhaps first of all by dealing with the Flixton Question. I clearly need to apologise to all residents of Flixton for my somewhat unguarded comments on the subject. I've had some really nice times in Flixton. Just wouldn't want to live there!
Last weekend was London. Unfortunately the Lord of the Flies open air thing in Regent's Park was rained off. I'll see if I can post a photo for you to see. Not quite worked out how to do those yet though. Perhaps I should should have made a video? The Summer Exhibition was fab though as ever. As was a lovely walk through Hyde Park on Saturday morning. Came across the Albert Memorial at the Royal Albert Hall which is just stunning.
Sunday was a meal out at Alchemist after the Manchester Day Parade with far too many VMs (as per). Good time though although a little hungover on the Monday.
Hope you're all keeping well. That's all. J x
P.S. Can't get a photo on here. Bloody frustrating.

Another Busy Week
Hello dear readers. And welcome, particularly to my dear friend Maggie. You'll all have heard of her (I've been to many of her charity "dos" over the years as well as various parties and, now, on Thursday a meal out at Room with her, Paul (it was his 60th birthday), Ev and, the usual suspect, Madame DD). And what a good time we had although I suspect I was on less than sparkling form yesterday in work after a few to many VMs. Hey ho. The food was delicious, the cocktails divine and the company couldn't be bettered. Down to earth then last night on the Help Line with a dreamy Chilean guy called Precinct. I have never met anyone with that name before. And he has the most gorgeous brown eyes. I'm a sucker for brown eyes if truth be told. The line was quiet (just one call) so me and Precinct just chatted about his life. His mother is a sex worker! I meet the strangest people...
What else? Of to see X Men First Class on Wednesday with Gill. Film was good and it was good as ever to catch up with the Manchester gossip. Last Saturday we went to Alchemist again for a meal. The lovely Angus was there and came over to chat (Michelle reckons me and DD drooled over him but I beg to differ - although I cannot recall at this moment whether or not he has brown eyes - I suspect he does). Anyway, food and drinks were good but the music was a little too loud for talking so we repaired to the Midland for post-dinner cocktails. It was awash with its usual cast of chavs - including someone with a full face tattoo which was really disturbing to look at. There was a bride (there's always a bride at The Midland on a Saturday night) and the inevitable stream of cheaply-clad women walking from the ballroom to the front of the hotel for a fag.
So quiet weekend planned. Housework (boo) and gardening (possibly - depends on weather). And then back to busy week next week too. Does it never stop? Am off to London next weekend though to see Lord of the Flies in Regents Park and The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Yay! That's all. J x

P.S.
Although of course lots of exciting things happened in the week -
Monday - was meant to go to the City parade with DD but didn't in the end - too busy at work
Tuesday - worked on the Help Line and then attended the steering group meeting with Jim & Geoff where lots of things were decided
Wednesday - cinema: Pirates of the Caribbean with Gill - rubbish film
Thursday - drinks in Malmaison with Chris (temporary bar, not very good) followed by hair cut
Friday - Lang Lang at Bridgewater Hall with Sara: superb. The man is fantastic.
So there you go. J x

Swansea Bound
Well, actually I've arrived. Have decided to spend the bank holiday at the Aged Ps to keep an eye on them as mother still unwell. To be fair she is feeling a lot better than she was, but she's still not right. She has been scheduled for tests (as an outpatient) to find out what the hell is going on. I'll keep you in the loop.
Weather here is rubbish although it did stop raining long enough for me to pop out and clear the gutters this afternoon. Spent the morning hoovering and shopping. OK, I confess. The hoovering took 10 minutes and most of the shopping was for me so don't elevate me to sainthood just yet.
Watched the football last night - very exciting and a good result - and Formula One today - very exciting and the wrong result. And that's all that's happened really. Will let you know if a cow breaks through the hedge or anything... That's all. J x

Because I Do
So I'm sat here reviewing my reactions to Eurovision. On the night I went with UK, Estonia and Germany. And I stick by the latter two but have gone off the UK entry somewhat. My favourite is definitely Estonia (despite the ridiculous lyrics - My Mama Told Me anyone?) - I even like the dancers although they are a bit Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to start with.
To Paul & Maggie's for Paul's birthday last night. Had a good time but shame about the weather as it would have been nice to spend more time in the garden. Quiet day today (thank the Lord) so it will be F1 and Chelsea on the telly. Have already watched Dr Who from last night and it has to have been one of the worst ever. Stupid plot, bad writing, cheap sets (borg rip-off regeneration stations anyone?). Work continues apace. Rumours and plots and politics a-go-go with absolutely no-one recognising my absolute genius. It was ever thus - look at Galileo... That's all. J x

Eurovision
Not a bad result UK-wise although scoring less than Jedward is of course a national humiliation and we should immediately withdraw our Queen from their country. I'm fairly sure Ma'am would be a Blue fan.
But all in all a bloody good show. Even if I did have to watch it all on my own on account of my Northern Best Friend deciding to prioritise the FA Cup Final at Wem-Ber-Ley (as I believe we're now calling it). However, technology in the form of texting (2 in Manchester, one in Brighton and one in Eastbourne) as well as various celebrities on Twitter kept me company.
Mother feeling quite unwell at the moment so please all think about her today and she'll feel better as a result. I'm sure. That's all. J x

Where To Start?
Been incredibly busy so I may forget to report stuff.
Last I recall I was marooned in Wales with nothing but gardens to walk around and antiques shows to watch on television (along with the odd tennis match). Obviously I made it back to Manchester OK. So it was then back to work and all that entails (don't start me).
Accompanied DD and others to the football on Tuesday (City v Spurs) which we won (thanks to a Spurs own goal). It wasn't a good match but the result means we'll be in Europe next year which is good news. And of course we're in the cup final today.
Went to the theatre this week - Ghost, The Musical which is actually rather good. Has some nice original songs in it and it moves along at a good pace. Some of the special effects didn't work perfectly from the angle I was sitting at but friends who have sat elsewhere in the auditorium said they looked good to them. If you do decide to go then I suggest that you look to purchase tickets in the centre of whatever part of the theatre you're sitting in. I'm fairly sure this will transfer to the West End because its been on a while now in Manchester and yet is still packing them in (and at £50 a ticket in Manchester that is no mean achievement). The choreography and lighting are really impressive too.
Then it was to The Alchemist last night. Me, DD and Bryn & Michelle went there last Saturday and had received bad service. When we complained Angus, the manager, asked us to let him know when we were next in and he would look after us. So I let him know that me, Lesley and DD would be there about 6 and he booked us a table. The place was jammed when we arrived but we were escorted to the best table in the house and appeared to have been assigned a waitress to look after only us (she had even been told in advance what I would be drinking!). Anyway we had loads to drink and also a meal and then when we asked for the bill (which came to £134) Angus, bless him, knocked £100 off. Unbelievable. To be fair I had hoped that perhaps we'd get a free round of drinks but I hadn't been expecting that level of generosity. We'll definitely be going back there again...
Have spoken to the Aged Ps today and mother, bless her, isn't feeling too well. So I'm sending her all my love and hopefully you will too. My cousin in Swansea (Hilary sister to Mike who has just had the cancer diagnosis) has fallen over and dislocated and broken her shoulder so is in hospital too. So the whole family is doing badly at the moment. Lets hope everyone gets well soon. And that's about all the news. I'm feeling pretty hungover at the moment but need to go and watch the cup final now. That's all. J x

Portugal Not
So, I'm still in the UK albeit Wales rather than England. The Aged Ps travelled up to Manchester by train as planned on Saturday but then we went out for a meal with DD (henceforth to be known as poisoner-general) in the evening and my Dad got food poisoning. He was really bad all night (all the bedding had to be washed!) and unable to travel in the morning. Indeed he still feels a little unwell now and has yet to consume any alcohol which is unheard of in the Lewis household. He wouldn't have been able to travel to Portugal the day after even if we could have re-booked our flights (unfortunately we'd checked in the night before online which meant we were unable to change our tickets - a lesson learned here). We'll just have to see what can be reclaimed on insurance but with a £75 excess anyway and no doctor's certificate I'm not hopeful.
As they'd come up by train their return tickets weren't booked until next Monday. So I decided to drive them home and spend some time in Swansea with them instead. I'll be back up to Manchester on Friday. Luckily we've had quite nice weather (apart from the wind) but its supposed to start raining at some point tomorrow. But I've been to the National Botanic Gardens yesterday and Aberglasny today so its not a total washout. But Portugal would have been nice.
In other news we've had some bad news from one of my cousins - Kathryn's Dad (she comments on here sometimes) as he has received a cancer diagnosis (what is it about my family - we all seem to get it - Kathryn's had it too?). We don't know all the details yet but he's seeing a specialist next week to find out how much chemotherapy they're going to recommend. Fingers crossed for him (not sure if you read the blog Mike but I'l be thinking of you next week).
And finally Fig may have cocked up his holidays and so may not make it up to Manchester for the International Festival which would be a real shame. Fingers crossed for him that he manages to sort it all out and get his arse up here as I haven't seen him for sooooo long.
That's all but please remember Kathryn and her family in your prayers tonight (whoever you pray to). Thanks. J x

Fat Fingers
So, he finally got the ring on her finger. We didn't think it was going to happen for a while there...
Anyway, I thought it was a lovely wedding and the dress was exquisite. And the wedding breakfast went well too. Savoury croissants and pain au chocolat and gallons and galloons of champagne. Finally broke up around 1400 (from 0800). Everyone was suitably dressed - hats, tiaras, "marry me instead" T shirts and the like.
Then off to town to buy some currency as flying to Portugal (early) Sunday morning. Aged Ps arrive tomorrow by train and then DD driving us to the airport at 0545. I know! But dinner tomorrow evening first with said Ageds, DD and Bryn & Michelle. Should be nice. It'll certainly be nice to have a break from work but then its back to all the work rubbish that's going on at the moment. Oh joy. But not going to worry about that just yet. Am taking 3 book group books with me. How many do we think I might finish? Even one would be a record for me recently!
Not taking computer with me but may blog from Portugal on phone if I can get it to work... That's all. J x

Oh Glorious Day
What a lovely day. I'm sat on the terrace typing this - topless! Yes I'm looking to kick start my tan for Portugal by freezing my nipples off in the weak morning sunshine. However, I come from hardy Welsh stock that should see me survive the resulting pneumonia (hey, I've done it once). In fact, only one nipple appears to be freezing off but that could be because I only have sensation in one nipple on account of the surgeons stuffing the other one at the back of my throat to plug the gap left by the tumor.
So, busy day ahead. Need to get all my shopping done as DD is stealing the car tomorrow. I need to tidy parts of the flat ready for film night tonight (Michelle's choice and we've no idea which film she's chosen). It will be a good night though I'm sure involving as it will food, drink and general merry-making.
Day off tomorrow and then off on errands of mercy on Sunday to my sick friend Jim (well, not that sick to be fair as he seems to be doing really well following the heart attack and we'll be going to a garden centre which, as regular readers will know, is one of my all time favourite things to do). Night out with DD afterwards and then its the hard slog to get the flat ready for the Aged Ps (we're all flying from Manchester to Portugal). Looking forward to it and have ordered my Book Groups next three books off Amazon this morning to give me some holiday reading while I'm away (to be fair this is about the onpy time I manage to actually get through the books). That's all for now. J x

Lovely Day
Looking bright and beautiful out there this morning. I'm off on my Flo Nightingale duties this afternoon with my friend Jim. He's doing really well at the moment and the main danger is that he'll try and overdo things instead of easing himself back into life gently because he's feeling so good. Rest assured I'll be giving him a good talking to so that he doesn't overdo things.
Did the helpline this week - its been a while! But it was good to get back into it. Had a trainee with me - a sweet guy called Ryan but unfortunately we had very few calls so he wasn't able to learn a lot.
To the theatre last night with Mike and Lesley to see the Ballets Trocadero de Monte Carlo. Absolutely fantastic. You wouldn't expect drag ballet to be so good but it is.
Easter is now on the horizon - how did that sneak up so quickly? Have our next film night on Friday with a busy week before that: Book club on Monday, Wrexham on Wednesday, cinema with Gill on Thursday... it just never stops! That's all. J x

Just Pottering
Lovely day yesterday. Wandered round town a bit, cleaned a bit, did a bit of washing, a bit of gardening and a bit of work. No pressure, no appointments, nothing. And then caught up on some recorded TV and read a fashion magazine and the new Le Monde D'Hermes Catalogue. A perfect Saturday. Also ordered vats-worth of Complan ready for Portugal (once I'd remembered what it was called) and since I get it through Amazon I slipped in an order for a Handel opera too!
Today is shaping up to be a little more hectic. Need to do some shopping for Jim before visiting him this afternoon and then out to meet DD and Bryn and Michelle later. Off to Wrexham tomorrow (oh joy) and London on Friday. Warrington in between including a million meetings. Looking forward to it all already... That's all. Enjoy the weather. J x

News and No Mistake
He's fine now, but Jim's had a heart attack. I know, and he's so young. I had a text from him in the week saying "hi, how are you and by the way I'm in hospital because I've had a heart attack" as casual as you like. He woke up in the early hours of Sunday morning with some chest pains which he assumed was wind/indigestion (poor love). When it hadn't got better after about half an hour he thought, very sensibly, that maybe he should get it checked out at the hospital. But instead of calling an ambulance or calling me he hopped in his car and drove himself there. It seems incredible (and it is) but this story could have had a much worse ending so don't try that at home kids. You phone an ambulance or you phone me.
He's had an angiogram which has shown that the blockage was removed by the medicine they gave him when he was first admitted (which is a very good sign) and he's back at home now with a warning to take things easy as well as instructions to take 7 pills every day for the rest of his life. I'll be going to see him Sunday afternoon and will update you all when I get back. I'll pass on everyone's good wishes whether you know him or not.
Other than that been a relatively quiet week. DD has gone to Venice for the weekend so I'm all on my lonesome but that's fine as I will be able to potter. Wrexham on Monday and then out with Karen's friend (and now mine too) Kathryn on Tuesday and then a hair cut and a help line session later in the week. Its all go...! That's all for now. J x

Baroque
The previous piece of music is from King Arthur by Henry Purcell. You may recall that me and my friend Michelle went to see Andreas Scholl a few months ago at the Bridgewater Hall and were quite disappointed. He did this piece but not in quite the same way that Klaus does it. The halting singing is normal I think (its a song about being cold) but I just love Klaus's version.
Had a fab time with my friend Karen Thursday and Friday and have just dropped her off at the airport. She hasn't changed at all. Plenty of VMs were drunk and I've made a new Pacesetter friend (one can't have too many of them) called Kathryn who hails from Newport but visits Manchester regularly on Pacesetter business. Venues included the Radisson, Restaurant Bar & Grill, Harvey Nics and the Novotel!
Have also finally dragged myself (with the help of Jim) to the new Lesbian and Gay Foundation building and got myself trained on the new switchboard so I start back on the helpline next week. It'll be good to be helping people again
I have no doubt at all that I shall see my very good friend DD soon to catch up on all that I've missed and shall report back accordingly. Have a good weekend everyone. That's all. J x

Too Long Again
Sorry people (assuming there is anyone out there who still checks in). Even if there isn't I will carry on with the blog because it serves as a useful online diary for me and its nice from time to time to go wandering back through my past to see what I was up to. There is quite an archive here now - over 5 years.
So, its been a busy week full of late nights. Tuesday it was to the Palace Theatre with Jim to see Jekyll & Hyde with Marti Pellow in the lead role. Its a nice little musical with some nice tunes in it - nothing too challenging or avant garde. It deserves to be better known than it is. Unfortunately, Mart Pellow - like Gareth Gates in Les Miserables - does not have a stage voice. The rest of the cast were strong though and so, on the whole, I enjoyed it.
Thursday night was my union's meeting in Liverpool (listened to a guy talk for over an hour on the Hutton Report and our new pensions arrangements - he was very good and made it all interesting and not boring at all). And then it was the Union dinner which was great - saw Pauline (who I trained with and haven't seen since - so that's about 15 years. She still looks the same and I don't. Got very drunk and ended up catching a train from Lime Street at 1130 with a whole load of drunk scousers. Not an experience I care to repeat.
Friday night was am dram night in Prestwich (with Jim natch): Into The Woods, which was done surprisingly well. And I love the musical anyway so had a brilliant time. But a late night again. And then last night was King Lear with DD and friends. It starred Derek Jacobi and so I expected it to be the highlight of the week but it let me down badly. I hadn't seen Lear before so wasn't sure what to expect but I'm fairly sure they'd messed about with it a bit. It just all seemed really rushed. People walked off stage one minute and before you registered the fact they were gone they were back on as a corpse. Lear went mad in a matter of minutes (I'm fairly sure these things happen gradually), people had their eyes gouged out (this was actually done well) but the whole thing didn't give you a chance to catch your breath. Anyway, not a fan. And the people we were with had seen a production a couple of years ago with Ian McKellan and they said he was much better.
Work was the usual mix of joy and frustration. But on the plus side I have next Friday off and Karen arrives on Thursday. Hurrah. Not seen her for ages and ages so loads of catching up to do. I'm fairly sure she hasn't been leading a quiet life all this time... ! I'll post again when she's gone. That's all. J x

Tough Week
Lots of meetings. Lots of difficult conversations. Telephone conferences-a-go-go. How does anyone find the time?
Ms DD has returned from climes exotic so it was off to a local bar for a couple of VMs on Thursday. And then she called round here last night so she could catch up on all the recordings I had made for her whilst she was away (trust me, my chores don't end simply because she's in climes exotic). Incidentally, make sure you keep an eye out for time's arrow. That pesky arrow can sneak up on you when you're least expecting it...
Have been watching the Japanese earthquake footage open mouthed. Its unreal and difficult to take in. When you first see it, it takes a minute or 2 before you realise what is going on. Its like nothing I've seen before and strangely compelling. The death toll is going to be thousands and thousands I expect. My heart goes out to them.
And that's all really. Quiet day today, no idea what I have planned for work next week so watch this space... J x

Finally, my nuts are getting some attention...
Yes, dear readers, my greenfinches are back. No idea where they've been all winter - normally they're all over the nuts I put out throughout the cold season but this year, nada. Perhaps they flew South this year because it was so cold? I've only seen 2 so far but I'm sure they'll get right on with breeding and be back in numbers in no time. Still had plenty of sparrows but they seem to ignore the hanging nuts and just go for what is spilt on the ground. Anyway, I'm happy the finches have returned. I'll update you on numbers as the season progresses (apparently its officially spring now (from 01/03/11). That's all. J x

London Was Good
But it was very cold and wet. Spent far too much time (and money) in One Aldwych too.
The Norman Rockwell exhibition was fantastic. Really enjoyed it and Dulwich Picture Gallery is a treat (even if it is a bit of a walk from the station). Was less impressed by the Watercolour exhibition at the Tate but it was still OK.
Les Miserables was very good as ever. We all got a bit teary during Fantine's big number as we thought of Sally. Marius was a little disappointing (played by Gareth Gates no less who really doesn't have a voice for the stage). Really disappointed by Black Swan. Nice idea and could have been a really good and informative film looking at the pressures on dancers at the top of the profession. But no, it was turned into a bit of a schlock horror with some lesbian soft porn thrown in. I did like Portman's outfit (assuming it wasn't Dior) and make-up as the black swan though.
Hotel wasn't too bad (Strand Palace) and it is dead convenient. Only bought an umbrella. But its a nice umbrella. Green. First class travel was good as ever.
Back in work now and loads to do as usual but that's what they pay me for. Harvey Nics for a martini or 5 last night with the lovely Lesley but nothing else planned for the weekend. Washing and cleaning it is then...
Physiotherapist on Monday and dentist on Tuesday. DD arrives back Monday too. And so it goes on... That's all. J x

Stuff
So I've been up to a bunch of stuff. Went to the theatre on Wednesday (Royal Exchange) to see Mogadishu. Hadn't been looking forward to it but absolutely loved it (isn't it bizarre how this often turns out to be the case?). Its a play about an inner city school and a false accusation of racism made against one of the teachers. The story is gripping (you've no idea how its going to turn out) and the acting is just superb - especially the main schoolboy who is frightening/chilling with the control he exerts over his contemporaries.
And then went to see True Grit on Thursday - again, I wasn't looking forward to it but in the event I loved it. I'd wanted to go and see Black Swan but have been forbidden from doing so by my mother who wants to see it next weekend. Its directed by the Coen brothers who seem to turn anything they touch into gold. I recommend it.
Then Friday I had "the call" (guess who from) and so had to go to Sakura for 5 martinis. Good to see the gang but have a vague recollection that I got into an argument about Pacesetter. Not a good idea when one is drunk!
Yesterday evening to Cloud 23 with one of my Team members and his girlfriend which was nice. Only 2 martinis though!. And luckily we didn't get struck by lightning.
Need to catch up on some work today and then the usual heavy week ahead next week but then down to London on Saturday for a few days - for my Dad's birthday - so will be seeing Les Miserables (4th time!) and Black Swan. Also going to the Dulwich Picture Gallery. There's an exhibition on that I want to see but can't for the life of me remember who it is now - hang on a mo -Norman Rockwell (just checked). So will report back on all that next week.
Stop Press - Scottish news, Karen may be coming North soon. Yay!
And that's all. Let's be careful out there. J x
P.S. I won't make a habit of including videos of everything I blog about. Honest.
P.P.S. I just tried playing all the video clips simultaneously. What a mess. Why would one do that?

Busy Week
So Lincoln was good. Lots of really positive, relevant discussions and action plans formed to take things forward and responsibilities assigned. Fantastic. Then back to Manchester for a meeting with my colleagues and to feed back on all the positivity, action etc. Of course they rained all over my parade but fear not dear readers. I remain in a positive frame of mind.
Saturday night was fantastic: another "film night". It was DD's turn to pick a film and talk about it and she had picked Schindlers List. A film which I'd never got around to seeing before. And what a fantastic film it is. To be fair you're never going to be able to find actors thin enough to portray emaciated Jews so it can be difficult at times to get the full effect of the deprivation when you're faced with a whole load of plump, well-fed actors. That said, I had a tear in my eye at one point and felt that Mr Spielberg had made a good fist of it.
Ralph Fiennes as the commandant was incredible. Both repulsive and attractive at one and the same time (just my type judging by past boyfriends!). A fine acting turn I thought. Liam and Ben did well too.
I'd be interested to know what you, my bloggees, would choose as your film and why. Please share your thoughts and also let me know what film you think I will choose when it comes around to my turn.
Michelle did her usual magic with the nibbles which were scrummy. Another busy week ahead so I'll update you next when I can. That's all. J x

Far Too Long
Sorry dear readers for my unaccounted for absence from this blog - almost a month! The only excuse really is that I have been quite busy. I won't have space here to recount all my exploits but as far as I can remember - and in no particular order - here goes.
Andreas Scholl was a huge disappointment. This was partly accounted for by the fact that I hadn't realised what a counter-tenor was. It seems a bit of a superfluous voice to me. None of the strength and oomph of a tenor voice and without the beauty of a boy soprano's voice. Sorry all you counter-tenor fans out there.
Loved loved loved The King's Speech. Fantastic film and fantastic performances. Hated Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Looking forward to seeing Black Swan and, later in the year, the new Harry Potter and, should it ever get made, The Hobbit.
Been to London for a weekend for Bryn's birthday. Saw Woman in Black (and hated it) and had a fab cruise up the Thames to Greenwich - which ended up with us being marooned (marooned!) in the middle of the river whilst we waited for the tide to go down so we could get under one of the bridges. As ever we had lunch in One Aldwych which we just all adore and which makes the best martinis.
Mrs T came to stay which was, as ever, a huge pleasure. Even if it did cost me a little more than I'd imagined - around £5000 in the end as someone took my card details over the weekend and went on a spending spree. Hopefully that's all been sorted now. But we did see the China exhibition at Manchester Museum and the Intuition exhibition at The Whitworth. The former was disappointing (not enough stuff) and the latter was brilliant - a really refreshing collection of artists.
Last night was a cancer charity quiz in Flixton. Anyone who even half knows me must know my views on pub quizzes. And anyone who knows me a little better will know my views on Flixton. So all in all not a highly anticipated night and, to be fair, it was fairly rubbish. But, looking to the positives Bryn & Michelle drove there and back (thanks guys), the soup they'd put on specially for me was tasty (thanks Paul) and we won a selection box! There was also a complete nutter-woman there to laugh about and some barman eye-candy.
Work has just been manic - I've been taking lots of "management action". But it just takes up so much time and its exhausting. Loads of meetings next week including 2 days in Lincoln so have a load of work to do this afternoon too. Phew. Hopefully it won't be so long before I blog again. Love to you all. That's all. J x

Retraction
In the previous post I say "sorry if anyone is offended". Actually, I'm not sorry. Its just a bunch of guys kissing and there is absolutely nothing offensive about that at all. And if you are offended then you probably shouldn't be reading this blog anyway. So there!
On a more conciliatory note I have decided to include a link to the text of President Obama's speech in Tucson. I read it and it practically moved me to tears. I think this will go down in history as one of the most important and passionate speeches ever made. Please take the time to read it and share your thoughts with everyone else. (it doesn't show up very well but you just need to click on the word "link" in the paragraph above to be taken to the speech).
That's all. J x

Just Because
Video attached because -
* I really like the song and
* It has lots of pretty boys kissing in it
Sorry if anyone is offended.
In other news, I'm feeling 100% better. I've had a brilliant week at work where I've achieved loads. I've also been given line management responsibilities for 2 additional members of staff (non-trainee Grades 7) which, I suspect, is going to prove a bit of a challenge. But you know me, I love a challenge. Sometimes.
Had my first vodka martnis of the New Year last night (so I must be feeling better) and then back here to watch some Mad Men with DD. Unfortunately didn't get to go to the football yesterday (the offer of a ticket was cruelly withdrawn at the last moment) but hey ho. It was only against Wolves anyway even if there were loads of goals scored. The week ahead holds the prospect of Andreas Scholl atThe Bridgewater Hall. No idea what he's like but he comes highly recommended. And then its that latest Narnia on Wednesday at the cinema. No Peter this time unfortunately but looking forward to it anyway. And then its down to London for the weekend to see The Woman in Black. No idea what else we'll be doing down there but lunch at Number One Alwydch is definitely on and I love that place... That's all for now. Happy Sunday everyone. J x

That's all for now. Happy Sunday everyone. J x

Calm Down Dear
Having spent all evening chopping and cooking and liquidising I just can't settle down now (and there's sweet FA on the telly) so I'll carry on with a domestic theme and do some housekeeping. On my laptop. There's just so much crap accumulated on it that it will be fun or cathartic or some such thing to clean it up. So that's what I'm going to do. Now. I shall do this whilst listening to some Wanda Jackson - an inspired Xmas gift from my very good friends Bryn & Michelle. Come on everyone, lets shake a chicken in the middle of the room....
"The Least Important Most Important Thing"
Its a Mad Men quote and I love it. Just remembered it and so I thought I would share it here before it wanders away again along with most of the rest of my memories. I can't even remember the context now but I'm guessing it was something about prioritising... That's all. Have invited DD round for some home-made soup tomorrow and so now I have to go and home make some. J x
Oh My G....
Whilst browsing all things Les Mis on YouTube (see earlier postings) I came across this.... abomination. Please God someone puts a stop to this before it happens.....
Les Mots D'Origine
So I'm sat here listening to the original concept album for Les Miserables in your actual French. Its really interesting because its very recognisably the modern Les Mis we all know and love and yet quite different in many ways (even apart from the fact that it is in French). Sadly some bits are better and some bits are dreadful so I'm never going to be able to look down my nose at anyone and say things like "well actually, I prefer it in the original French" which is of course one of the main reasons for purchasing the concept album in the first place. Tant pis (as I'm sure Fantine warbles at some point). Incidentally, the French have no-one to match the great Miss LuPone.
So this week has been interesting. I've been ill for most of it but struggled into work for a series of short days until I succumbed by Friday and took some personal time (officially "time off in lieu" or TOIL but I've decided to go with the Americanism "personal time" from now on just for the hell of it and because it will probably drive DD to distraction). She's been around all week. She turns up just as I'm going to bed and has snuck off before I get up in the morning - yes, its the cricket. Still its been nice to find her here on those nights when I've had to get up to throw up or do drugs or whatever. Feeling better now anyway so should be fit as a fiddle by Monday ready for a busy week.
Have decided I will go to Portugal this year. Have also decided to go to London with the Aged Ps for my Dad's birthday in February and will purchase tickets for Les Mis for his present (its what he wants and I don't mind at all as I love the show - this will be my 4th time). No-one well known in it at the moment though. But its such a strong show that as long as they can hold a tune they'll be fine.
DD has purchased me a beautiful orchid to apologise for making me watch so much cricket which was nice of her. She'll be popping around tomorrow for our start on Series 1 Mad Men (she bought me the box set for Xmas) and some of my delicious home made soup. Which I've yet to make. Better get on then.... That's all. J x

New Year...
...new illness! Yes, dear readers, I've been ill again. But after all it is somewhat of a New Year/Xmas tradition. Luckily it didn't hit until New Years Day afternoon. We were still in Leeds so I spent the evening and night between bed and the toilet throwing up. I think it was the same thing I had not so long ago and Dr Aged P (Mother division) has diagnosed it as norovirus. Looking this up on the internet suggests she may be right as you can get that multiple times and the papers suggest there's a lot of it about at the moment. Anyway, had Nurse DD here all last night looking after me (whilst simultaneously keeping an eye on the cricket) and I'm feeling better today although still a little weak. Made it to Sainsburys this afternoon though and have had some yoghurt and blueberries which have stayed down so fingers crossed I'm over it. My temperature has come down too.
NYE itself was a bit of a mixed bag. Mix-ups over whether we'd booked a "New Year's Meal" at the hotel - at £70 - we hadn't! Whether one could wear their beautiful new bowler hat at the Sky Lounge Bar even if one had pre-booked a table (one couldn't). Nor could all one's friends who had hilariously all purchased bowler hats from a joke shop wear theirs either... Did find a really nice friendly small bar near the hotel though and we had a real laugh with Jools Holland (can't believe its not live) in the hotel bedroom afterwards. Met up with Sarah and Hugh on NY day lunchtime and it was good to see them both. And then the lurgy descended. Hopefully won't have to go through this again for a while. That's all but I hope you all had a really good time too and I wish you all a happy and healthful New Year. J x
