Just dropped Mrs T off in the wilds of Bolton. It was great to see her and she's looking and sounding good. She arrived bearing photos (from the evil sister) of my last party. My God. I was huge. I must say that (if it doesn't come back) the cancer may end up actualy prolonging my life because looking at the size I was I must have been a prime candidate for a heart attack. Wouldn't that be ironic?
Went to see Michael Clayton with Gill last night. Really good film and George Clooney is excellent in it. He's also still gorgeous.
Off to cinema in the week to to see the new Jodie Foster film which looks really good. And then next Saturday its down to London to see Patrick Stewart in Macbeth. The reviewer from The Times didn't seem to enjoy the production but I think it sounds great. Its set in a hospital apparently which seems ideal. As we know, most nurses (apart from the lovely Debbie) are witches...
Seeing DD tomorrow for coffee (I think she's found me a chink in her hugely hectic social life for which I am, as ever, extremely grateful....
Seeing the designers this week to so I'll let you have an update on the refurb as soon as I know anything. J x

George Clooney, the sexiest man alive as political animal
Am I siting low on this chair or am I getting smaller?,” George Clooney cracked after he took his seat in a recent press con. Told that his costar Tilda Swinton had just vacated that chair and didn’t seem to have a problem with it, the actor retorted, “Tilda just looks tall because she is…tall.”
Wisecracks aside, the actor-writer-director is known for his good manners, so one of the first questions thrown at him was about his thoughts on public behavior, especially of celebrities.
“I believe in the Golden Rule: Treat people how you’d want to be treated,” began George, who stars in the dramatic thriller, “Michael Clayton,” with Swinton, Tom Wilkinson and Sydney Pollack. The movie is the skillful directorial debut of Tony Gilroy, who wrote all three “Bourne” films.
Revealing
George, who looks leaner and sports a salt-and-pepper beard these days, shared this anecdote, which was as startling as it was revealing: “The other day, this woman came up to me and said, ‘I hated your last movie!’ I was like, ‘Okay, thank you.’
“She went on and on, then she said, ‘You’re a lot older in person.’ So, I said, ‘Those extra 35 pounds look great on you.’ She was like, ‘What did you say?’ I said, ‘I was paying you a compliment.’ She replied, ‘You’re an asshole!’ I told her, ‘I was standing here and you insulted me!’”
“I don’t mind it because I’m in a profession that has to take something like that,” explained the “ER” and “Batman” alumnus. “But, I see it happening to other people—my family and friends—the coarsening of America! I miss good manners. I spend time with activists I don’t necessarily find savory. But, because of the Darfur issue, I have to work with hardcore people.
“They’re very much a part of the movement, so they have to be included in the discussion. I disagree on almost every issue with them, but I have to be polite and find the good in what they’re trying to do!”
Opinion
“Unkindness is spreading, though. It’s like this ‘American Idol’ thing of wanting to make fun of people—and everybody has an opinion that must be voiced out. You want to say, ‘Hey, you look old,’ or ‘You look short.’ People didn’t use to do those things. I have a tough skin—I can take it. But, people are being less kind.”
In “Michael Clayton,” he plays a “fixer”—someone who takes care of clients’ personal mess, from hit-and-run accidents to spouses’ shoplifting charges—in a big Manhattan law firm.
Is he a good fixer in real life? “My own relationships aside,” the bachelor began, to much laughter, “I’m good at fixing other people’s relationships.”
The world knows that beneath the joking exterior and the two-time “Sexiest Man Alive” tag, George is active in humanitarian causes, especially in raising awareness for the violence in Darfur, Sudan. He has helped raise millions of dollars for the relief of its refugees.
Issues
George added: “We go through periods when actors are vocal about issues, and periods when actors are made to look stupid. They probably helped perpetuate that notion by being stupid sometimes.
“Problem is, if you want to speak up about issues now, you have to know more about Darfur than Bill O’Reilly (the conservative TV personality), so that if he wants to bring on a fight, you can sit him down and say, ’Let’s talk about that!’ You have to be well-informed, because people will try to destroy your credibility!”
The actor also shared his thoughts about the pitfalls of Hollywood, which is known for its liberal views and for endorsing political candidates: “It’s dangerous to support a candidate!,” he stated. “I couldn’t support my father when he ran for Congress, because it was like Hollywood versus the heartland.
“You pick things that are apolitical—like Darfur. There’s no right or left on that issue—only right or wrong! You have to find ways not to alienate people and give even the worst people a way out.”
He clarified, “I like my country. But, we still envision ourselves passing out stockings and chocolates in World War II, and rolling into France to liberate it. But, we’re starting to understand that there’s another world out there, not just a country!
