Unbelievable
Politicians and the media running around like headless chickens. The discs have fallen down the back of someone's desk and will turn up in due course. And I really don't understand why the chairman had to resign. We had guidelines in place and they weren't followed by a member of staff. Its the member of staff who should have gone. That's all. J x P.S. Off to Solihull tomorrow for 2 days to discuss important matters such as, no doubt, how to seal envelopes and correctly address them...

Yeah we know that but am not sure this is much comfort to the nation. I think its marvellous give the guy some res if only Nick had had such integrity.
Pity the politicians never fall on their sword. They offend in much worse ways yet never face up to their obligations.
If the discs are found and used criminally (other than in the usual HMRC way), one can only hope that the first targets will be the MPs whose details must be there. Wouldn't that be some kind of poetic justice?

Mark is fuming about the stupidity of building insecure IT systems ... ooh if he was in charge this would never have happened ... oh gawd ... he's shouting at thev telly!

Well I agree with Mark it should quite simply not be possible for a so called junior officer to do this. And as far as guidelines are concerned all our staff suffer from information overload. Guidelines are routinely passed on in ever increasing numbers via e-mail so that mangers can tick box done that. There is very little testing of staff's understanding and/or recollection. What is truly gobsmacking here tho is that no one had the nous (as surely any reasonable man would have) to say no to the NAO and that the NAO were complicit in the request for information to be passed on in this way. Clearly they should have got off their arses and gone to Washington as indeed the guidelines state surprise surprise. So no I don't agree with Jonathan that the little man should go. I agree with George Osborne who cares about Vision when we can't even manage day to day competence. If we continue to employ managers that do not understand the business mistakes will continue. If a culture of yes men and spin prevail then we will never address the real problems. Sorry for the rant but truly we despair.
It should not have been possible for ANYONE to copy so much information from a database to a CD. A CD that can be read/copied/altered by anyone. Security should be built into the system it should not rely on people to stick to a procedure as we are all fallible.
Its far bigger than the Revenue and highlights Government mismanagement of IT projects. Whether it be procurement, budgets, timescale, appropriateness, Government IT is a mess. Those of us that work in IT despair as it really shouldn't be like this.
Gosh, well isn't this a little hornets nest? Who'd have thought that a little topical comment rather than the mundane details of my dreary life could provoke such an outpouring of passion?
